Who we are
The Scene is a live-culture network for Cape Town that gathers the city's events, venues, and promoters into one trusted, human-curated guide.
Why we started
We compete against millions of other content creators for the attention of a limited pool of audience members who might realistically engage with our work, on foreign platforms that use opaque algorithms to filter our success by how well it traps the attention of other users. We connect through closed WhatsApp groups we start ourselves or get invited to through existing contacts, often surprised to discover that other artists have been working in similar ways, and feeling similar joys and difficulties, for years, without us ever having crossed paths.
We follow the few commentators, magazines, and outlets that recognise our interests, and still feel that the fullness, depth, and history of our practice isn't reflected by any contemporary medium. We know the work we do carries and creates important layers of cultural history, but we feel it slip away as focus turns to the next round of relentless promotion. And we sense our audiences' saturated, hype-wary aversion to exactly the promotion we're forced into by the platforms available to us.
What The Scene is
The Scene Cape Town is an experiment, led by local artists, that seeks an alternative approach to connecting creative communities across the city. We believe that platforms can, and should, be built to serve the people who use them. The Scene is a place to find events, connect directly with audiences and creatives, engage with local publications, and discover local businesses and organisations.
Our ambition is not to build a hyperscale global platform that aggregates the noise of the world, but a context-responsive network that lets local residents and visitors connect with the cultural pulse of the city. It's built on principles of human curation, opt-in data collection, and community digital infrastructure.
Our philosophy
No algorithmic feed. No pay-to-rank noise. What surfaces on The Scene is stewarded by a network of local curators, not a machine competing for your attention.
The bigger picture
Human social networks shape collective consciousness: our common beliefs, habits, rituals, movements, and language. Social media augments the mind so far as to change the patterns of our brains, and in doing so digital networks produce a kind of reality distortion field. A feed gathers a plethora of perspectives from a scene, and that becomes part of the current cultural consciousness. Information is shared; debate, outrage, joy, and jealousy are produced in repeating montage. Algorithms surveil our every action, learning our psychology closely enough to predict, and to shape, what we think and want through the information they feed us.
The internet is supposed to be a portal to an infinite digital realm of human-produced information. But what we see is fed to us by machines.
What if we were to create our own reality distortion field, and fill it with ideas, communities, choreographies, and ways of being which made sense to us?
The power already in the room
When Messi stands to take a penalty at the World Cup, how many billion people watch him in the same breath? A planet of minds focused on the same thing. A billion tears of joy, a billion heartbreaks. So there are ways to focus our collective energy. Imagine if that power were shaped by intentional hands, toward a better world.
We don't think a revolution has to announce itself. It can appear like moss on the face of a cliff: in thousands of little splotches that, given time, grow to swallow the whole mountain.
Instead of tuning our minds to the beat the machines feed us, we make a music of our own.

Who is going to learn to make this new music: the waves and frequencies that shape our souls, and the way each of us moves through a life, as individuals, as collectives, as community? This is the question Southbound exists to explore.
Southbound is a future-facing studio dedicated to the craft of shaping sovereign-social digital ecosystems and building new technology for digital humanity. Recognising how deeply digital tools now augment and shape us, we design human-centred, trust-rich, community-driven platforms that amplify and connect the best of who we are. We imagine our products, beginning with The Scene, as digital operating systems for the culture of real communities: infrastructure that helps people and collectives pursue their missions while keeping sovereignty over their identity, context, and data.
Our aim is to equip individuals, groups, businesses, communities, and nations with the technology and the philosophy to shape their own fields of trust, information, and human connection, in their own vision and context. Southbound was born in South Africa, built by a youth-led team of artists and technologists working across culture, technology, science, and society.
We are invested in what we see as one of the defining questions of our time, digital sovereignty: the capacity of people and communities to own and operate their own means of connecting, sharing trusted information, building enterprises, and holding their collective memory and value for themselves. Southbound exists to build the ecosystems and tooling that make that possible.
We don't know where the future lies. But we know that it is Southbound.
South into our hearts, south up in the sky, to the centre of the Milky Way, to the crux of the gravity of the world we live in. What storms await, we shall see; but journey into the void we must, for there is a great treasure: the parting of clouds in the light of a better world. Until we dream of life, and life becomes a dream.
